The mission of the Sustainable Communities Initiative is to coordinate partnerships and provide assistance to enhance the sustainability of communities across the state.
Each community will define sustainability
differently, depending on its
circumstances, history, culture and values.
One broad, generally-accepted definition
from the Brundtland Commission states:
“Sustainable development is development
that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.”
The Office of Smart Growth and the Sustainable Communities Initiative essentially share the same mission and will share this website. Please review the Resources page to find a wealth of resources on everything from the basics of land use planning for planning commissioners, to sustainable economic development and sustainability best practices. Please share with us your community's successes and let us know what we're missing!
