CERT Training for Denver and Government Employees
The City and County of Denver, Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is now offering Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) to educate employees of Denver about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact our area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT participants can assist others following an emergency event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT participants also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in preparedness projects in our community.
During a disaster, the number and scope of incidents can overwhelm conventional emergency services. Employees/Citizens may initially be on their own for 72 hours or more. The CERT program is an all-risk , all-hazard training designed to help employees/citizens protect themselves, their family, their neighbors, and their neighborhood in an emergency.
The ability of our community to recover from a devastating terrorist event or any natural disaster/emergency requires active planning, participation, and cooperation from all members of society. Each individual shares the responsibility for preparedness. By encouraging preparedness and hazard mitigation, CERT can help minimize the effects of a disaster and facilitate a faster recovery.
The long-term goal for the Denver CERT program is to train as many city employees, citizens and organizations as possible to be prepared for a local disaster. The 2008 calendar for CERT training courses is now available at Denvergov.org/oem.

Fire Education & Communication Products from the National Wildfire Coordinating Group
The National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Wildland Fire Education Working Team (WFEWT) created a publication to provide access information for fire education and communication materials available via the web on the NWCG website and Symbols.gov. The Wildland Fire Education Working Team & the National Symbols Program are proud to support wildland fire education, communication and prevention, and we hope these products will help you meet your broader fire education needs. Please note that this is not an all inclusive list, but a sampling of materials available.
The NWCG website contains interagency wildland fire key messages and links to fire education and communication materials. Items relating to Fire Education from the National Symbols Catalog are available to everyone. No security code is necessary. The National Symbols Program invites you to use these products for your educational needs. As with other National Symbols items, these products are not for resale.
These materials often complement the Smokey Bear fire prevention campaign. Smokey's message and lessons about taking personal responsibility to prevent unwanted fires are a vital link in our overall fire education responsibilities. These products can also be used in concert with the educational materials available on the Firewise website catalog located under firewise.org, which deal with wildfire and its interaction with human development at the Wildland/Urban Interface (WUI).
