SITUATION REPORT 2007-2a - New Castle Fire

Event Type: Wildfire ( New Castle)
Situation: The fire continues to burn into its fourth day. It has grown to approximately 1,800 acres with 50% containment. The fire fuel currently consists of Juniper pine and brush. No structures have been damaged and no additional injuries have been reported. A Type II Incident Management Team has taken Command of the incident.
The fire is being fought with approximately 250 hand crew personnel are on the ground along with one Type 1 helicopter. Other air assets are being demobilized. Multiple burnout operations have occurred within the past 24 hours which has helped facilitate the elimination of fire fuels within the area.
The voluntary evacuation order continues for approximately 90 homes in the area, with an additional 110 homes being placed on alert. A shelter has been established at the Coal Ridge High School along highway 6 in New Castle. However, no one is currently staying there. All evacuees are staying with family or friends. On Tuesday evening, a community meeting was held to inform the residents of on-going activities to contain the fire and protect private property.
Weather Report: Temperatures at the scene are expected to be in the upper 80s / low 90s with moderate to high winds anticipated for this afternoon. There is a 5% chance of precipitation.

Misc. Info: Assets assigned to the Whittaker Flats Fire are being demobilized and containment was anticipated to occur on the evening of June 20. The fire burned a total of 1,016 acres on both Bureau of Land Management and private lands located in the Book Cliffs above the Cameo exit off Interstate 70.
