Mauricio Canyon fire

Event Type: Wildland Fire
Situation: A controlled burn became unmanageable and by 6pm on January 8 had burned approximately 6,000 acres, including six structures and ten out buildings, and is moving southeast. An additional 40-50 other structures remain threatened. Five percent containment has been obtained. No injuries have been reported.
A Type III Incident Management Team (Mike Hessler) has been activated and is in charge at the incident command post at the Library in the City of Aguilar.
Five strike teams and four hand crews (comprising 70 fire fighters) are on the ground along with one helicopter.
This evening’s activities will involve structure protection and establishing trigger points for follow-on actions.
A mandatory evacuation order has been issued, but some families are declining to leave. No reverse 911 system is available in this area and Sheriff Deputies are going door-to-door. The Red Cross has already set up an evacuation center at the school in Aguilar, as of noon eight families have arrived. A second center has been established at a Methodist Church. One public meeting was held at the Spanish Peaks Fire District on the afternoon of January 8. A second meeting is tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of January 9.
Wea ther Report: Tonight: some clouds, low temperatures near 24 degrees and winds out of the northwest 10-20mph. Monday: Few clouds, otherwise sunny, high temperature 45 degrees, winds out of the northwest 5-10mph with a 20% chance of precipitation.
Agencies Involved: State Forest Service, Red Cross, Las Animas and Huerfano County Sheriff Offices along with Offices of Emergency Management, Craig Walker Ranch, Spanish Peaks Fire Protection District, and Bon Carbo Fire Protection District.
