Report Date: 1000 hours January 4, 2007
Event Type: Blizzard
Situation: The Civil Air Patrol is commencing reconnaissance operations looking for stranded motorists and those who remain snowbound in their homes. Once they are located, the National Guard will be contacted for relief operations. The aircraft will be operating from Colorado Highway 389 (as their eastern boundary) and flying west in Las Animas County.
National Guard will continue their agricultural hay lift operation throughout the southeast region. This includes both ground and air assets. Weather (high winds) may become a factor for air operations as the weather front moves into the State later today. Approximately 1,500 bales of hay have been dropped thus far.
CDOT continues its snow plow operations throughout the southeast region. They are also expanding their snow blower and snow plow support to DEM by assisting in the county road effort.
Potential future threat continues to be building collapses due to weight of heavy snow. Walsh Fire Station has partial collapse and potential for complete collapse. Walsh Assisted Care Facility has a partial collapse and a structural engineer is necessary to assess additional threat. Springfield Teen center collapsed last night. Additional concern is residences running out of propane gas. If citizens need to leave homes they can go to the temporary shelter at the Springfield High School. Potential secondary damage from freezing may result.
