Report Date: 0715 hours, 31 December 2006
Event Type: Blizzard
Situation: This week’s storm system has moved out of the state, which will provide some relief to the southeast region by allowing CDOT teams to work on clearing the highways. This will provide the opportunity for ground search and rescue operations to continue as well as the public to dig out.
The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is commencing operations this morning with fixed wing aircraft conducting reconnaissance throughout the southeast region, depending upon the local weather conditions. Aircraft are based out of Colorado Springs. CAP’s primary mission is to locate stranded motorist and relay that information to a team of National Guard helicopters (who will be staged at 10am from Buckley AFB) who will attempt to pick up these individuals. A proposed message has been sent to the region for broadcast by the local radio stations to those who may be stranded regarding several different methods to attract the attention of the aircraft.
Type III Incident Management Team (Short) from Jefferson County is enroute to the area command center in Pueblo.
The availability of fuel within the region is a concern along with the potential for the discovery of large numbers of dead animals.
